What do we do about the federal debt, the debt we have dumped on our grandchildren? G. Tracy Mehan III wrote about it ten years ago when the federal debt was 54 percent of GDP. Now it's over 100 percent. He writes
Pensions, health care, and education are the three big government programs, amounting to an estimated $4.6 trillion out of a total of $8.1 trillion. Defense is another trillion, so the government spending on "everything else" is $2.5 trillion.
If we Commoners decide that we are fed up with the gubmint running our pensions, we could change it. We could, if you like, convert to a mandatory savings program for all workers. Or we could just trust American citizens to get on with it.
If American Commoner women decided, they could take health care out of the hands of government. They could make sure their mothers were taken care of in their End of Life, and they could make sure that their husbands earned enough for health care for them and their children. And the Karens could supervise health care for the poor.
If American Commoner women decided, they could take education out of the hands of government -- and all the lefty teachers and professors -- and do it themselves. They wouldn't do it alone, of course; they would do it as a neighborhood, with all the other mothers putting in their share, and specializing in this or that. And they'd rope in the fathers to do the boy stuff.
Gubmint education was started in the 19th century by chaps like Horace Mann when the average human was still barely literate. So it made sense to them for government to step in. Also, they didn't like the idea of the Puritans or the Catholics running the education system; they were Transcendentalists. But I say that today's American women have the chops to educate our children without the supervision of bossy Horace Manns and foolish women professors like Harvard's Elizabeth Bartholet, who thinks homeschooling is "authoritarian." She means, presumably, that parents having authority over their children's education gives them authority. And that is authoritarian. I am not making this up.
This is not that hard. If we are true Commoners and want to take responsibility for our lives and for our loved ones, then we have to tell the authoritarians that they can take their free stuff and put it where the sun don't shine. Otherwise, in the words of Shakespeare, the fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.
And until that day our overlings are going to take advantage of us, and use our wages as tax money and deplete our savings with inflation to buy votes and indoctrinate our children and inflate our currency and lord it over us. Because we are underlings.
It ain't the fault of Republicans. It isn't even the fault of Democrats. They are the Inner Party and their gig is Jobs for educated Gentry -- and satisfying the Gentry lust for ambition, vanity and honor. They do it with the votes of the Clients and free stuff for underlings.
And if we don't rebel against this stitch-up, then we are underlings, and deserve what we get.
The Republicans have painted themselves into a corner with all this profligate spending. They will soon be faced with the choice, not of cutting taxes, but searching for the least damaging way to raise revenue without encumbering income and productivity. In the game of chicken, budget cuts and entitlement reform versus raising taxes, the Democrats will be hard to beat.Don't think so. If we are in a jam it is because that's what the American people have voted for. We voted for Social Security, and we oldsters won't vote for anyone that proposes to reform it. And women all want unlimited health care and education, and they won't vote for anyone that proposes to cut Mom's Medicare.
