Getting to Acceptance

Yeah, I know about the Five Stages of Grief. It starts with Denial and ends with Acceptance.

So I am already coming up with rationalizations for why, maybe, after all, it is OK that Trump is (probably) going to lose. Because reasons:

If Trump wins reelection then probably the Senate will flip in 2022 and the Dems will win it all in 2024 because Time for a Change. No Thanks.
Chances are there is ugly economic news in the immediate future, as we dig out of COVID. With Trump, it's all his fault; with Biden he's doing his best.
Chances are there will be a recession before 2024. Blame Trump and elect a Democrat.
"There is no more money." Because of the COVID stimulus and the Trump tax cuts. So there is really no money for Medicare For All, Free College, and End Fossil Fuels. But a Biden administration would still try. And screw the economy.
At some point the Commoners are going to have to say: Enough of this race-sex-intersectional virtue-signaling; Enough of all these rent-seeking programs that only benefit the educated Gentry; Go away and leave us alone.

Let's divide the last century or so into three Ages. First there was the Pioneer Age of the frontier and building the railroads; the Republican Party and the Civil War veterans dominated. It ended in 1929. Then there was the Victims Age of the New Deal and the Great Society and Civil Rights; the Democratic Party and the educated Gentry dominated. It ended in 2016. Now we have the Commoner Age. Maybe it will be a Republican Party domination, and maybe the Commoners will teach the Gentry a lesson.

Or maybe not.

The thing that sticks in my mind, since I read it from Matt Taibbi in the summer, is the moral framework of "anti-racism."

It sees the human being as locked into one of three categories: members of oppressed groups, allies, and white oppressors.

So if you are Amazon you virtue signal by posting a BLM message on your home page;  if you are United Airlines you virtue-signal by supporting Proposition 16 in California to re-institute Affirmative Action. That makes you an "ally" and one of the good people.

But, given that the allies and the white oppressors are all white or Brahmins like Google's Sundar Pichai and daughter-of-academics Kamala Harris, who gets to decide which is which? Would that be God? Or would it be the bearded @jack? Thank goodness the allies have the Brahmins on their side; the Brahmins have been successfully divining the will of Brahma for thousands of years.

I have a different moral calculus. I think it is very virtuous because nobody gets to look in the magic mirror and say "mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest in the land?" Virtuously speaking, that is.

Now in my cultural calculus the oppressed peoples are Clients and follow whoever leads them; the allies are the educated Gentry, full of ambition, honor, and vanity; and the white oppressors are the Commoners, that just want to wive and thrive and hand down a little to the kids. In my calculus nobody gets to be the all-conquering virtue-signaler with the Hate Has No Home Here yard-signs.

Because we all have our virtues, some of the time, and we are all hypocrites, most of the time.

Here's my moral calculus, adapted from Nassim Nicholas Taleb:

We are all virtue-signallers -- and hypocrites!

We are all rent-seekers -- and you better give us our share!

We never quite got to start our own business -- but we always wanted to!

The problem with all moral calculi and virtue-signaling and Grand Inquisitors is that the people on the receiving end of your virtue get really pissed off. Because they don't like being belittled; they don't like someone else having first crack at the cookie jar. And they don't like some jerk making billions because he was in the right place at the right time.

But go ahead, vote cheaters and allies and all the ships at sea. You may as well make hay while the sun shines.

But maybe in a couple years, or four years, it will be you guys going through the Five Stages of Grief. Last time, in 2016, you chaps didn't seem to do so well; in fact it seems to me you are still in Trump Denial Syndrome from the Trump election.

But I'm sure your grief counselor can help you better than I can.

Cheating is a Sign You Are Losing

Our Democratic friends have been stealing elections since -- well since well before Boss Tweed. But never mind that. Let us talk about the cheat-ology going on with our educated Gentry ruling class today.

It's pretty obvious that the Democrats have engaged in widespread vote fraud in this 2020 election. Hey, what else is new?

But what is more important is the whole "fake" culture surrounding it.

It's not just a question of "fake news." It is fake everything.

Why does our ruling class have to lie about so many things?

Why did Hillary Clinton have to set up the "fake" Steele Dossier? Why were swamp creatures like Brennan and Clapper and Comey and Uncle Tom Cobbley and all in on the deal?

Why did the Dems decide we had to have two years of the "fake" Special Prosecutor Mueller investigation to investigate "fake" Russian collusion?

Why did Nancy Pelosi empower Schiff and Nadler for their creepy "fake" investigations?

Why is The New York Times putting out its "fake" 1619 Project proposing that the United States was founded to do slavery?

Why is social media censoring conservative voices?

Why are the liberals screaming about racism sexism and homophobia half a century after race and sex discrimination was made illegal? And after the Supreme Court legislated gay marriage?

Why do liberals believe in the Manichean belief system of good "oppressed peoples" and "allies" against the evil "white oppressors?"

And whatabout the low-rent nature of the principals? Nancy Pelosi, the 80ish Democratic Speaker of the House, capa di tutti capi of the California political family that features her unimpressive nephew Governor Newsom and the featherweight Sen. Harris. Chuck Schumer, Democratic leader in the Senate: what's his claim to fame?

And whatabout the utterly unimpressive Democratic candidates for president disporting themselves a year ago? The ageing socialist Sanders, the quota blacks and women and gays?

And why have the opinion poll guys been putting out so many "fake" polls?

And why is education a total wreck and force-feeding "fake" critical race theory religion to our children from K through grad-school?

I will tell you. It is because things aren't working for the educated Gentry any more. The world isn't working for them. So they do what humans do when things start to go wrong. They cheat. They can't believe their eyes; it cannot be that their hour in the sun is coming to an end.

Here's an item that has stuck with me over the years. Back in the early days of the Tea Party, Nancy Pelosi dismissed it as "astroturf." Do you see the "tell" here? Nancy Pelosi cannot imagine an organic, spontaneous political movement. Because her entire political life has been about "fake" activism:  trained activists masquerading as helpless victims, marshaled up before the news cameras. It was inconceivable -- inconceivable in Princess Bride terms -- that any political movement should be organic and real.

In real life, we still don't know how the Tea Party came to be. (Oh yeah, in due course it was hi-jacked by all the usual suspects, but that was after.)

Let us use the "fake" arc-of-history metaphor to describe what is going on. Every life, every family, every community, every empire, every ruling class goes through its history describing an arc: it is born, it grows, it succeeds, it rules, it declines, it cheats, it dies.

Let us say that our present educated ruling class was born with Rousseau, with the fantasy that people are basically good, and it is society that corrupts them. Let us say that it grew with the Educated Youth of the 19th century that gave us Marx and the Fabian Society and the Progressive movement in the US. Let us say that it succeeded with the democratic politicians that gave us social legislation. Let us say that it ruled with FDR and LBJ. Let us say that it declined with the corrupt Clinton and the ideologue Obama. Let us say that it cheats with Hillary, Nancy, Chuck and the "fake" media and the social media moguls.

So really, there is nothing left for our educated Gentry but to die a decent death. Or, if it chooses, an ugly death.

Enough of the past what of the future?

What new arc of history is upon us? What new dawn is breaking with its glorious sun rising with a new and blinding light? What is presently being born and like to grow and succeed?

I would like to think that we are entering the Age of Commoners, ordinary people that want to live honest, responsible, productive lives, and maybe leave children and grandchildren behind them; people that don't need to blaze across the heavens in a glorious arc like a meteorite; people that aren't motivated to great deeds in service of ambition, honor, and vanity; people that aren't just followers of a great leader.

But I could be indulging in wishful thinking.

The End of the Commoner Rebellion

We don't know yet exactly how our Democratic friends are going to cook up the votes in the states remaining to be called in the 2020 Presidential Election as of this moment: in NV, WI, MI, PA, NC, GA.

But I don't think it matters.

The fact is that President Trump didn't expand the map beyond his victory in 2016. To establish the Revolt of the Deplorables as a thing he needed to increase his 300 odd Electoral College votes to 350 or 400.

And if he has in fact increased his support among blacks and Hispanics, then he has lost support among white educated Gentry.

One of the notions of Gaetano Mosca in The Ruling Class is that the Commoners don't get a vote. Political change only occurs when the ruling class divides and the change faction wins.

My hope was that a Trump reelection would redefine politics in the US and that the educated Gentry would decide to compose its differences with the Commoners. But that did not happen. If you are an educated Gentry this morning you are saying to yourself and your educated Gentry friends: pedal to the metal, on Critical Race Theory, and on saving the planet from climate change. We've got those racist-sexist-homophobe bigots just where we want them.

In other words, the global educated Gentry is going to go Full Speed Ahead on its Great Reset agenda, "building back better" under the benevolent supervision of the educated and the evolved and the creative people. That means, of course, also, Full Speed Ahead on climate change and eliminating fossil fuels.

And all the Good Little Girls of intersectional politics are going to be cooking up new "1619 Projects" and other reasons to oppress the Basket of Deplorables. Because they had it coming. Let us rehearse Hillary Clinton's Basket of Deplorables speech one more time:

You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. (Laughter/applause) Right? (Laughter/applause) They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks – they are irredeemable, but thankfully, they are not America.

Notice the end of the quote, that the "irredeemable... are not America." Do you see what that does? It empowers the speech police to go out throughout the land to identify and cancel anyone guilty of being "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic  – you name it."

Hey, there is never a shortage of people ready to teach the other guys a lesson. And now that the Commoner Rebellion has failed, they will be out there working their tails off on social media, in the movies, in the schools, K thru retired professor.

Oh yes. In the end the Reign of Woke Terror will sputter out, perhaps in a Thermidorean Reaction, or perhaps just in exhaustion, or perhaps after defeat in civil war. But as of now I can promise you it has its bit within its teeth.

I feel that the Woke Religion is a Great Reaction, a lurch back to the primitive. We don't need religions with that kind of discipline, and the Woke Inquisitors are going to do nothing but harm. Tell that to the woke enthusiasts, and see what you get.

Nothing new, of course. There are always people hanging around panting to dive into a moral war against the Evil One. Usually the moral warriors are the Evil Ones they are supposed to be fighting. My belief is that in the modern era we really don't need such strong religion. But what do I know. There is always a moral component to humans as social animals, and always will be.

Then there is the Green New Deal, the plan to save the planet from runaway global warming from the burning of carbon-based fuels. If you are a ruling class you slobber at a supposed existential peril like runaway global warming. Because it licenses you to mobilize every corner of society in a gigantic war to save humanity. Think of the power, the glory! There are always people lusting after power and glory and there always will be.

Now my belief is that a totalitarian moral hierarchy that the current Woke Religion calls for, and the totalitarian economic/political hierarchy that the current climate panic calls for can only end in disaster. And that is because of my Four Laws.

Socialism cannot work, because it cannot compute prices.

Administrative government cannot work because it doesn't have the bandwidth to supervise everything.

Regulatory administration cannot work because of "regulatory capture" by the businesses being regulated

Government programs cannot work because you can never reform them except by expanding them.

In other words top-down anything, except in an actual war, doesn't work because it isn't social, and humans are social animals. When we set up a hierarchical top-down structure we are setting something in concrete, assuming there is One Correct Way, and the one thing we can be certain about in human life is that tomorrow the world will change and we will have to change our plans.

One fine day, we humans will emerge from the Dark Age into which our globalist educated Gentry is leading us. I just hope that my descendants are among the happy ones that survive till that day.

My Predictions: Election Day 2020

Of course, as usual, the polls show that the Dems will just pull out a win in the presidential election today. But given that the polls are now based on a response rate of 6 percent to each call rather than 50 percent as in olden times, I suspect that the polls are not that reliable.

So we have to go with our gut.

My gut with respect to my gentry liberal neighborhood yard-signs.

Way back in the aftermath of the 2016 election some feminist group created the #WeBelieve yardsign. You know what I am talking about:

In this house We Believe
Black Lives Matter
Love is Love
Women's Rights are Human Rights
Science is Real
...
Kindness is Everything

Here's an example

Wow! That must be a new one: "Not all cops are bad."

But the point is that clearly, there was a lot of enthusiasm out there in liberal land. Back then.

Then, of course there was the Death of George Floyd in May 2020 and pretty soon every liberal yard in North Seattle had a Black Lives Matter yardsign out front. Hey, you can buy them at the local hardware store!

So, a lot of liberal enthusiasm back then in May.

But there are not that many Biden/Harris signs out front. Just sayin'.

My gut with respect to "oppressed peoples" enthusiasm

Now, if our liberal masters are not that enthusiastic about Joe Biden, whatabout their Clients, the "oppressed peoples" of which we've heard tell? I haven't seen anything on the enthusiasm of blacks, Hispanics, women, etc. I suspect the lack of data points is telling us something.

My gut with respect to Trump voter enthusiasm

On the other hand we are seeing unprecedented enthusiasm for Trump among his natural supporters, the Commoners of these United States. We see remarkable turnouts at Trump Rallies, where Trump extemporizes to the delight of thousands of his fans. We see the incredible Trump Car Parades, that report incredible numbers, like 75,000 cars at a parade in Miami/Dade County; 75 mile-long parades. And of course the Outrage of the Century, the Trump Honor Guard for the Biden/Harris Bus. I may be wrong, but I have never heard of enthusiasm like this before in a US election.

And I believe that scientists agree that enthusiasm equals turnout.

My gut with respect to mail-in voting

Now I believe that, back in the spring, the Democrats all got together with their hive mind and decided that it would be really cool to convert the whole US to mail-in voting, because safety. And cheating. And, of course, within moments their bribed apologists in the media were echoing the New Wisdom.

But I wonder if this was really such a good idea. See, I believe that mail-in voting requires a degree of literacy that many "oppressed peoples" do not possess. And it is not just literacy, but a confidence and familiarity with handling paperwork that matters. So I suspect that mail-in voting will lead to a reduction in turnout among the lower orders.

My gut with respect to the Lockdown

Or the Lockdown. I wonder if the Shelter in Place mentality that Democrats have encouraged in their supporters -- and which women, in particular, have embraced -- is such a good idea when it comes to winning elections. Suppose that turnout in the highly locked-down Democratic states and cities is down? Oops!

I think that the whole purpose of elections and campaigns is to get your supporters all enthusiastic and get the opponents' supporters all pessimistic and sheltering in place. Hey guys!

My gut with respect to "suburban moms"

I don't know if the "suburban woman voter" thing is really a thing or not. But I would say that what trumps women saying Eeuww when reading about Donald Trump reciting how women let him feel them up is women reading about and watching "mostly peaceful protests" in major American cities. Because "women expect to be protected." Now, there are several women of my acquaintance who are not happy about riots in cities. And they have responded by voting for Trump and voting a straight Republican ticket. We will see if this extends outward to women in general.

My gut with respect to the "shy Trump voter."

Is it really such a good idea to have news items about conservatives getting censored and canceled on social media? Because I would say that what the ruling class -- any ruling class -- needs to know is what people are really thinking. They need their District Officers reporting when "the natives are restless." And people won't tell you what they are really thinking if they know all about people like them that have lost their jobs because of their political opinions.

Put it this way, liberals. Like Mayor Daley in 1960, you chaps need to know how many votes you need to manufacture in order to win the election. If there is a whole class of voters that won't talk to pollsters because they are afraid then you chaps won't know where to manufacture votes and how many might be needed. Is that smart? I don't think so.

Looking at the bigger picture you need to know what everyone is thinking, so you can plan where to spend money and where to send the candidate.

And, of course, the "shy Trump voter" is not just shy, he is mad as hell and he is not going to take it any more. Maybe that's why I am reading this morning about polling stations with lines around the block. I just don't think that heavy turnout means a Biden win. But I could be wrong.

And if there are "shy Trump voters" whatabout "shy Trump students?" Suppose you are a non-political student at one of our select colleges. What do you think about the lefty student activists and the lefty professors that oppress you every day with their political obsessions. Do you join the parade? Do you give up? Do you count the days till graduation? Do you determine that you are never going to vote for a Democrat in your life? You tell me.

My gu with respect to the stock market today

The stock market indexes are up about two percent today. I wonder what they mean by that?

Bottom Line

I've written this again and again. The reason for the current lefty cancel culture is that lefties aren't winning any more. The halcyon days when lefties had FDR in the White House and supermajorities in both Houses of Congress are gone for ever. The glorious days when lefties could create Big New Programs are gone forever. That means that life is hard for the left. They can't just win automatically. And what do people tend to do when life gets too hard? Exactly. They cheat.

But you know what? People don't like it when other people cheat on them. In fact, they hate it.

Just sayin'.

Great Reset: Building Back Better. Oh Yeah.

The World Economic Forum has announced "The Great Reset." These are the chaps that run their annual show up at Davos on Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain. Here is what that means, according to the WEF:

As we enter a unique window of opportunity to shape the recovery, this initiative will offer insights to help inform all those determining the future state of global relations, the direction of national economies, the priorities of societies, the nature of business models and the management of a global commons. Drawing from the vision and vast expertise of the leaders engaged across the Forum’s communities, the Great Reset initiative has a set of dimensions to build a new social contract that honours the dignity of every human being.

The United Nations has its "Building Back Better." And of course Joe Biden is also Building Back Better, too. Of course.

It seems to be a top-down initiative by the Best and Brightest to teach us deplorables the facts of life.

Notice how the WEF puts it: "to help inform all those determining the future state of..." And who are the lucky ones, the wise ones, the powerful ones "determining the future" I wonder.

So @jack censors the NYPost. Google Search thinks that COVID infections are the most significant question with regard to Trump rallies. And all these wise heads are determining how to direct traffic after the Great Pandemic.

I am trying to figure out what all these top-down chappies are up to. And what they think that makes them so special that they are qualified to teach us all a lesson.

And it is hard for me because my basic belief is that you can't direct traffic, Mr. Wise Philosopher. Not only because the battle plan is useless after the first gun is fired. Not only because administrators can't hope to keep track of all the variables as the direct the economy. Not only because the world changes unpredictably to upset the plan.

But also at the basic level because the greater well-being of the world may not intersect at all with the notions of an @jack, a WEF, a UN, a political campaign. Or anything.

I would say that the biggest problem in the world is the people who think on the lines of "determining the future" of the world.

Because the future of the world is determined by accident, by anybodies discovering something that changes the correlation of forces, by a Sacrificial Hero that inspires millions for hundreds of years, by the mysterious operations of the human herd instinct, Jung's collective unconscious.

But, almost everyone is easily misled by the conceit that he can lead his fellow humans to victory or at least the moral and intellectual standing to "build a new social contract that honours the dignity of every human being."

Well, I'll tell you what I think. I think that all these conceited Great Reset and Building Back Better need to be taught a good sharp lesson. They need to know that the last thing the world needs is a bunch of conceited jet-setters and billionaires and bureaucrats and lifer politicians implementing their tired and conceited agenda on the rest of us.

Because, you see, if there is one thing I am sure about is that none of these conceited idiots have a clue. The world will stumble and bumble its way forward, as it always has, two steps forward and one step back. What I don't like is that the experts and the moralists and the lockdowners, for all their self-confidence, usually manage to give us one step forward and two steps back.

But that's what grumpy old guys like me have been saying since the dawn of time.

This "Fact Checking" Thing and @jack's Beard

Can we now admit that the "fact-checking" era is over?

Because, let's face it, "fact-checking" was always a liberal grift to avoid publishing conservative attacks on liberals.

No need to go into the weeds on this. It was OK to publish thinly sourced attacks on President Trump, accusations that had political-hit-job written all over them. And to spend tax-payers' money following up every possible false trail armed with Special Prosecutorial powers trying to trap the guy in some shenanigans, no matter how trivial.

But when it comes to Joe Biden and a lifetime of pay-for-play corruption, help! Where are the smelling salts?

Hey, liberals, did you know that being one-person-removed from the actual transaction means you can say "I never took any money from any of those people." Quite right, Joe. It's called "deniability" in the trade of influence politics, of which I am sure you are the Grand Master.

But the fact-check culture means that @jack can reach into his beard and declaim that Twitter is not going to publish "hacked" material. Because principles. I always wondered why @jack sported a beard. Now that he has revised and extended it during the COVID years, I get it.

You could say, of course, that the "fact-check" culture was a political joke by our liberal friends, as in "hey, why don't we tweak the right's noses by using their devotion to facts and logic and reason by subjecting the right to fact-checking?"

Whereas every good lefty knows that everything in this world, from race on down, is a social construction.

As a matter of fact, of course, everyone who has stumbled into Kant knows that. Because if, with Kant, we believe that we cannot know things-in-themselves but only sense impressions, it follows that everything we know about things is a social construction, starting with what George Lakoff calls "basic-level" concepts like cat.

Why do you think little Susie knows that a cat is a cat? Because Mommy told her.

The joke is that -- as with everything the left touches -- our lefty friends have taken a stunning discovery and turned it into a political weapon.

Because, sure, race is a social construction, but humans categorize everything, including different kinds of humans. It is helpful to know that people looking different is significant, and that it might serve to differentiate enemy from friend. For instance, in the current era of mostly peaceful protests, it might be helpful for the average pedestrian to categorize males on the street by their hair: maybe you should watch out for the guy with a man bun, but not the guy with a crew-cut that looks like he just started basic training at Parris Island.

Sure, let's all agree that physical characteristics, as defined by social construction, are not dispositive because, after Kant, we cannot know things-in-themselves. But you never know, it could help.

Facts are what we come up with after applying our received notions about the meaning of life, the universe and everything, usually after a very cursory glance.

(I hesitated before putting in "meaning of life" because even I am something of a facts-and-logic guy. But then I realized that first comes the belief in a meaning of life, then comes everything else, including facts, logic, science, and the universe and everything.)

For instance, I would be inclined to believe any accusation of corruption against a Clinton or a Biden, because my experience, solidified by years of consuming conservative media, leads me to believe that Clintons and Bidens are up to no good. The notion that Clintons and Bidens are up to no good is a social construction.

But the point about a social construction is: does it help navigate the uncertain world of a million sense impressions? Meaning, is it helpful to develop a social construction that Clintons and Bidens are up to no good?

Many of our citizens organize their political lives these days around a social construction that may be summarized as Orange Man Bad. Hey! They have a perfect right to do so, right, @jack?

Hey @jack! Stop mumbling in your beard!

But, the question is, would it be a good idea to use the social construction of Orange Man Bad as a strategy for, e.g., investing your 401K? Hmm.

And would it be a good idea to interpret everything in political life in These United States through the lens of the social construction of Orange Man Bad?

For instance, suppose you were a political pollster and you believed in the social construction of Orange Man Bad. Do you think that your social construction would help or hinder your polling to find out who or what was going to win the presidential election of 2020?

In a way, there is something comical about the notion of "fact-checking." You mean to say, you wise one @jack, that ordinary people are not able to sift fact from fiction and must be protected from the lies of political actors?

For there is a real danger in the "fact checking" culture. If your guys are out busily labeling things true or mostly true, false or mostly false, there is a danger. The danger is what scientists agree is "confirmation bias." There are no facts out there, scientists agree. There are only interpretations.

But you educated liberals already knew that. Right @jack?

President Xi's Greater China Project Will Fail. As Our Elites Greater Woke Project Will Fail

I was reading a piece about China the mega-nation yesterday. How President Xi and the CCP see themselves as building a Greater China -- including, of course, not just Mainland China but Hong Kong, and Taiwan and the Muslim areas of western China,

Of course they do, because the whole point of the left's project, what I call the Great Reaction, is the faith in politics, that politics is the means for Heaven on Earth, led by the educated Gentry trained in the schools and seminaries of the ruling religion of politics and its downstream culture.

But I say that the Age of Revolution, of political transformation of human society with a vanguard of committed activists, is over. Been there done that.

And I say that the Age of Politics, of political management of human society with a priesthood of ideological ministers, of an administrative bureaucracy of carefully trained nomenclatura, of regulatory supervision of the economy and the culture, is in its final stages. Been there, done that.

The salient feature of human society in the Age of Revolution and the Age of Politics is the idea of mobilization for war: religious war, cultural war, political war. Problem is that humans are not programmed for war on a continuing basis. They can respond to the present emergency, but eventually return, instinctively and inevitably, to wiving and thriving, which is the real meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

So the Great China project will fail, because we humans are beyond all that. And China proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt already in the 20th century.

The Great Leap Forward was a grand plan of the political management of the whole of the Chinese economy, under the charismatic leadership of a Glorious Leader. It failed, of course, with a butcher's bill estimated at 30 million Chinese.

The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was a grand plan of religious and cultural transformation of the whole of society, under the charismatic leadership of a Glorious Leader. It failed, of course, with a butcher's bill in the millions.

Only after the Double Failure did the Chinese ruling class in the CCP decide to try the other way, to allow a market economy  to grow up without the daily and hourly supervision of all economic and cultural activity of the Chinese people by the Party.

But that lasted only a while. Now, under President Xi, China is being forced back into the logic of its lefty ruling class culture. Because that's what lefties do. They cannot imagine a society without political supervision by an evolved and educated progressive ruling class. And the Factory Girls encountered by Leslie Chang in early 21st century southeast China clearly understood themselves as individuals called upon to create their own lives on their own.

Hey, let's be nice about it. The Chinese CCP ruling class is not much different than our Woke ruling class. It thinks, as our ruling class thinks, that it is called by history to bend the arc of history towards justice. And once you are intstalled in power you naturally determine to use that power -- for good, of course.

We see that in our own ruling class, especially in the aftermath of 2016. It is simply unthinkable to our lefty ruling class that anyone other than its own kind is qualified and destined to rule. Orange men? Deplorables? Systemic racists? Eeeuuww!

As I say, I believe our Woke ruling class has completely missed the point. And if they press their power -- whether in stealing the election, using its social media pals to censor the internet, packing the Supreme Court, eliminating the Electoral College, eliminating fossil fuels -- it will visit disaster on us and on itself.

And I believe the same is true for President Xi and his CCP and his vision of a Greater Nation of China. His plan will fail, because it denies the truths of our age, that religious and cultural and political domination of society do not work. Because human society, and indeed the universe and everything, is much too complex to be so supervised and controlled.

The funny thing, of course, is that it was lefties, Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno that clearly enunciated this truth in their Dialectic of Enlightenment. Domination and hegemony don't work. And Heidegger confirmed this with his notion of humans being "thrown" into the world. And lefty Habermas contributed with his concept of humans living in a "lifeworld" of social interaction rather than the rigidities of the mechanical world of logic and reason.

As I say. The only question is the size of the butcher's bill on the inevitable failure of President Xi's Greater China project.

As is true of our own ruling class and its Greater Woke Project.

All of these fools and knaves are marching in lockstep in a monstrous Great Reaction that simply amounts to a lurch back to the primitive that resurrects slavery, feudalism, vengeance, and all the rest of our ancient and not so ancient past.

I dream of a better world that has woken up beyond the hellscape of lefty woke Reaction.
