They were much too valuable to the slave masters, who lived close to them and would hunt down and punish any who thought of escaping. Maroon colonies did exist in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica. The owners of those slaves lived back in England and employed straw bosses to work their slaves. The bosses had no ownership of slaves and did not view them at valuable. Therefore, they did not vigorously pursue escaped slaves. In America any escaped slave was captured and punished. In Jamaica any escaped slave who made to one of the numerous maroon colonies was safe and would not be found (because no one was looking for them).
